How long should I talk in IELTS Speaking?

The ideal speaking length depends on the part of the test. In Part 1, you should aim for the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ of about 15 to 30 seconds (2–3 sentences) per answer. The best way to hit this is by using the A.R.E. Framework™: Answer, Reason, Example. In Part 2, you are expected to speak for up to 2 full minutes. Using the Topic Diamond™ (Past, Present, Future, Opinion) will ensure you never run out of things to say. In Part 3, aim for longer, well-developed answers of about 45 to 60 seconds using the I.D.E.A. Framework™. You can practice hitting these exact time limits using the built-in timer on the SpeakPrac app.
