Welcome to our interactive fluency and coherence practice workshop! This isn't just theory – we're going to turn everything you learned in Lesson 6: Fluency and Coherence into measurable improvement through structured practice.

My Official Band 9 Score, Breakdown & TRF for Verification
I want this to be like having me as your personal speaking coach. We'll use the same techniques and tools that helped me achieve my Band 9, including the SpeakPrac app I developed specifically for IELTS practice. By the end of this workshop, you'll have concrete data showing your fluency improvement and practical techniques you can use every day.
What You'll Need for This Workshop
For the best experience, I recommend using:
- • The SpeakPrac App: Get free access here for fluency analytics
- • Alternative: Any voice recording app (phone recorder works fine)
- • Quiet space: 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted practice time
- • Notebook: To track your improvement metrics
Understanding Your Fluency Baseline
Before we start improving, we need to know where you're starting from. Think of this like a fitness assessment before beginning a training program. We're going to measure three key fluency indicators that directly impact your IELTS score.
The Three Fluency Metrics That Matter
WPM
Words Per Minute: Your speech rate. Think of it as the speed of your car.
Target: 120-150 WPM for natural conversational English
PHW
Pauses per 100 Words: How often your car sputters or stalls due to hesitation.
Target: Lower numbers indicate smoother flow
APD
Average Pause Duration: How long your pauses last. Short natural pauses are fine.
Target: Shorter pauses = better fluency scores
Exercise 1: Your Fluency Baseline Assessment
Let's establish your starting point. This baseline will help you track concrete improvement throughout this workshop. Don't worry about being perfect – this is purely diagnostic.
Baseline Speaking Task
Your Question (Part 1 Style):
"Tell me about the town or city you live in."
Instructions:
- With SpeakPrac App: Open the app, tap the big orange "Speak" button, and answer for 30 seconds
- Without App: Use any voice recorder and speak for 30 seconds
- Don't overthink: Just speak naturally – this is your authentic starting point
- Record your metrics: Note down WPM, PHW, and APD if using the app
- Save this recording: We'll compare against it later
Pause the video/page now and complete your baseline recording before continuing!
The Coherence Blueprint: Your Improved Structure
Now that you have your baseline, let's see how we can immediately improve both your fluency and coherence using proven frameworks. This is where the magic happens – turning your natural ideas into organized, flowing responses.
If you used the SpeakPrac app, you'll see two transcript tabs: "Original" and "Improved." The improved version shows you a more coherent way to structure your answer with natural linking words and better organization. This is your roadmap for improvement.
SpeakPrac A.R.E. Framework™ in Action
❌ Unstructured Response
"I live in Sydney. Um... it's good. There are shops and... uh... people. I like it because... well... there's stuff to do."
• Lots of hesitation (um, uh, well)
• No clear structure
• Vague language ("stuff", "good")
• Incomplete thoughts
✅ A.R.E.™ Structured Response
Answer: "I live in Sydney and I absolutely love it here."
Reason: "There's so much to see and do, with plenty of shops, cafes, and tourist spots to explore."
Example: "I really enjoy checking out the local markets and landmarks on weekends."
• Clear structure with logical flow
• No unnecessary hesitation
• Specific details and examples
• Natural linking language
The Power of Repetition: Scientifically Proven Technique
Here's where we implement a technique backed by linguistic research from experts Boers and Deconinck. Their studies show that structured repetition is one of the most effective ways to build how to improve fluency in IELTS speaking.
The Science Behind Repetition
When you speak about the same topic again, your brain doesn't have to search for basic ideas or vocabulary – it's already warmed up. This frees up mental energy to focus on how you're speaking rather than what to say.
The Mental Load Shift:
- First attempt: 70% thinking about content, 30% thinking about delivery
- Second attempt: 30% thinking about content, 70% thinking about delivery
- Result: Smoother, faster, more coherent speech
Exercise 2: The Repetition Breakthrough
Now we're going to answer the exact same question again, but with a specific focus on improving your fluency metrics. This is where you'll see measurable improvement in real-time.
Second Attempt: Targeted Improvement
Same Question:
"Tell me about the town or city you live in."
Before You Start:
- • Review your baseline metrics
- • Set specific improvement goals
- • Use A.R.E. Framework™ structure
- • Focus on natural linking words
Improvement Targets:
- • Increase WPM by 5-10 words
- • Reduce PHW by 1-2 pauses
- • Shorter average pause duration
- • Smoother A.R.E. transitions
Record your second attempt now – 30 seconds, same question, better performance!
Analyzing Your Improvement
This is the exciting part – seeing concrete evidence of your improvement! Compare your two recordings side by side and celebrate the progress you've made in just minutes.

The Power of Measurable Practice
What you just experienced is the foundation of effective IELTS preparation. You didn't just "practice speaking" – you practiced with purpose, measured your progress, and saw concrete improvement. This is exactly how I trained for my Band 9, and it's how you can achieve your target score too.
The SpeakPrac Cycle™: Your Daily Practice Method
You've just experienced what I call the SpeakPrac Cycle™ – a simple but powerful loop that transforms speaking practice from random conversation into targeted skill development. Here's how to use this cycle every day:
The SpeakPrac Cycle™
SPEAK
Record yourself answering an IELTS question
ANALYZE
Review your fluency metrics and transcript
IMPROVE

Advanced Workshop Exercises
Ready to take your fluency and coherence practice to the next level? These advanced exercises target specific aspects of fluency and coherence that separate Band 7 students from Band 8-9 achievers.
Exercise 3: Framework Speed Challenge
Building Framework Automaticity
Practice using different frameworks until they become second nature. This builds the mental muscle memory needed for test-day confidence.
Part 1 Questions
- • "Do you like to cook?"
- • "How often do you exercise?"
- • "What's your favorite season?"
Use: SpeakPrac A.R.E. Framework™
Part 2 Topics
- • A memorable journey
- • A skill you'd like to learn
- • A place you'd recommend
Use: Topic Diamond Framework™
Part 3 Questions
- • "How has technology changed education?"
- • "Should governments fund the arts?"
- • "What makes a good leader?"
Use: SpeakPrac I.D.E.A. Framework™
Challenge Rules:
- • Pick one question from each category
- • Record three separate attempts for each question
- • Track WPM improvement across all three attempts
- • Goal: 10% WPM improvement by the third attempt
Exercise 4: Coherence Under Pressure
Rapid Response Training
Test-day conditions often create pressure that can disrupt your coherence. This exercise builds confidence in organizing logical responses when thinking time is limited.
Pressure Training Protocol:
- Question Pool: Prepare 10 challenging Part 3 questions
- Think Time: Only 5 seconds to organize your thoughts
- Speaking Time: 90 seconds using complete I.D.E.A. Framework™
- Focus: Maintain logical flow even when ideas aren't perfect
- Measurement: Rate coherence from 1-10 after each attempt
Sample Challenging Questions:
- • "How will artificial intelligence affect employment in the future?"
- • "Should there be limits on social media use for children?"
- • "What role should governments play in environmental protection?"
Coherence Checklist:
- ✓ Clear opening statement
- ✓ Logical development of ideas
- ✓ Relevant examples provided
- ✓ Alternative perspective considered
- ✓ Natural conclusion reached
Exercise 5: Signposting Integration Challenge
Natural Linking Mastery
Practice using signposting language that enhances rather than disrupts your natural flow. The goal is to make linking words feel as natural as breathing.
Three-Version Challenge:
Take any Part 3 question and answer it three times using different signposting approaches:
Version 1: Basic
Use simple connectors: "and," "but," "so," "because"
Version 2: Natural
Add conversational markers: "Actually," "You know," "What I mean is"
Version 3: Sophisticated
Include advanced markers: "On the other hand," "From my perspective," "That said"
Analysis Focus: Which version flows most naturally? Record all three and identify which signposting style feels most authentic to your speaking voice.
Your Daily Fluency Practice Routine
Consistency beats intensity when it comes to building fluency. Here's a structured daily routine that takes just 15-20 minutes but delivers measurable results over time.

Troubleshooting Common Fluency Issues
Even with structured practice, you might encounter specific challenges. Here are the most common fluency obstacles my students face and proven solutions for each:
Issue: "I keep saying 'um' and 'uh'"
Why It Happens:
- • Natural thinking time fillers
- • Habit from nervous speaking
- • Searching for perfect words
Solutions:
- • Replace with "Well..." or "Actually..."
- • Practice strategic pausing instead
- • Use reformulation: "What I mean is..."
Issue: "Long pauses while thinking of what to say"
Why It Happens:
- • Falling into the Content Trap
- • Trying to find "perfect" ideas
- • Lack of framework confidence
Solutions:
- • Accept first simple idea that comes to mind
- • Practice frameworks until automatic
- • Use discourse markers: "That's interesting..."
Issue: "I keep starting sentences over"
Why It Happens:
- • Perfectionism during speaking
- • Grammar Trap activation
- • Lack of self-correction skills
Solutions:
- • Learn to self-correct and continue forward
- • Practice "good enough" mindset
- • Use reformulation instead of restarting
Issue: "My WPM is too slow"
Why It Happens:
- • Over-analyzing word choices
- • Lack of speaking confidence
- • Insufficient practice with frameworks
Solutions:
- • Practice repetition technique daily
- • Focus on fluency over perfection
- • Gradually increase target WPM by 5-10 words

Final Thoughts: Your Fluency Journey Continues
What you've experienced today represents a fundamental shift in how you approach IELTS Speaking practice. You've moved from random conversation to targeted, measurable skill development. You've seen concrete evidence that improvement is not only possible but achievable in a single session.
The techniques you've learned – the SpeakPrac Cycle™, repetition method, framework integration, and metrics tracking – are the same ones I used to achieve Band 9. They work because they're based on linguistic research and real test experience, not vague advice or unproven theories.
My Personal Message to You
I created this workshop because I believe anyone can speak English fluently and coherently. Your language background, your current level, your previous speaking anxiety – none of that defines your potential. What matters is consistent, intelligent practice with the right tools and techniques.
The improvement you saw today is just the beginning. With regular practice using these methods, you'll develop the kind of natural, confident fluency that not only impresses IELTS examiners but serves you throughout your academic and professional life.
Remember the Key Principles
- Fluency is about forward momentum, not speed: Smooth progress beats rapid but choppy delivery
- Coherence comes from structure: Your frameworks provide the roadmap listeners need
- Practice with purpose: Random speaking won't improve your score – targeted practice will
- Measure your progress: What gets measured gets improved
- Trust the process: Consistency over perfection leads to breakthrough results
